About us
Daniel Levy, founder
Daniel is primarily an educator, showing what are perhaps easier and more durable ways of building than the norm in the United States. He is both a builder and environmentalist. In Daniel’s past he studied Environmental Studies (SUNY Stony Brook), and earned a Masters degree (Montclair State College) and PhD (University of Maryland, College Park), in Industrial Education. Daniel taught woodworking technology, and impacts of technology on society, at the university level.
He worked for Habitat for Humanity in West Baltimore for ten years, where he obtained grant financing and co-created a lead abatement program, taught construction, and supervised renovations of nineteenth to early twentieth-century row houses. With help from volunteers, he installed the windows and exterior doors in 150 homes.
Using his academic knowledge and a lifetime of building experience, Daniel builds homes that use methods and materials that differ from traditional approaches. He believes that we should build not only for energy efficiency, but for longevity, low-maintenance, and accessibility, with non-toxic materials. His buildings limit clients' exposure to toxic chemicals included in many ubiquitous building supplies.
One of his favorite materials is autoclaved aerated concrete, which forms the structure of his current project, Bellwether on Main, in Hillsdale NY. His previous AAC projects were the Woodstock (NY) Passive House, and he first used AAC in 1999 in Baltimore County, Maryland.
